Taste profile
Legend has it
The gnome on La Chouffe was chosen from the legends of the Ardennes, where the little folk are called nutons. They are said to live in caves and underground passages. People used to leave broken things out in the evening with a little food, and by morning they were mended. But a nuton could not stand being mocked. When one farmer made fun of the help, the nuton broke its silence and cursed him: ear by ear I made you rich, ear by ear I will ruin you.
Beer stories travel from brewery to bar to guest, and rarely shrink on the way.
Interesting facts
- The start
- On 27 August 1982 the brothers-in-law Pierre Gobron and Chris Bauweraerts brewed their first batch in a 49-litre mash tun, for less than 5,000 Belgian francs.
- The gnome
- The idea came from a watercolour of a gnome, shown on a Belgian TV fundraiser after a tornado hit Léglise in September 1982. A friend who taught art drew the brewery's gnome, finished in April 1983.
- Today
- Duvel Moortgat bought the brewery in 2006. Today it makes 300,000 hectolitres a year and exports to 72 countries.
