Legend has it
The brewery takes its name from a saying of Emperor Charles V. As the old Mechelen chronicles tell it, the emperor claimed he was fonder of "the juice of the daughter of the ear of grain" than of "the blood of the bunch of grapes": beer over wine, in other words. That is why Belgian brewers like to count him as one of their patrons, and in Baarle his daughter of the grain ended up as the name over the door.
Beer stories travel from brewery to bar to guest, and rarely shrink on the way.
