Legend has it

Chimay has a legend about one of its princes. As the story goes, the Prince of Chimay fell out with the lord of Couvin, who had him seized while hunting and locked in a dungeon under Couvin castle. Years passed. Then a goatherd's arrow fell into a crack in the rock, and when he reached in, a hand gripped his fingers. It was the prince. He wrote a message on a piece of slate, the boy carried it to the princess at Chimay, and men from seventeen villages marched on Couvin and set him free.

Beer stories travel from brewery to bar to guest, and rarely shrink on the way.

The Christmas beer
Blue began as a Christmas beer the monks developed in the 1950s, and it has been known as Chimay Blue since 1956.
The name
The name Grande Réserve is used when the beer is sold in 75 cl bottles or larger.
The prince
The abbey was founded in 1850, after Prince Joseph de Caraman-Chimay invited monks from Sint-Sixtus in Westvleteren.
