Legend has it
St. Bernardus carries the name of St Bernard of Clairvaux, the great saint of the Cistercian monks, and one of his best-loved legends is about flies. As the story goes, in 1124 a swarm of flies filled the abbey church at Foigny, buzzing round the monks and the priest at the altar until no one could pray in peace. Bernard is said to have declared, perhaps with a smile: "I excommunicate them!" By the next morning, they say, every last fly lay dead.
Beer stories travel from brewery to bar to guest, and rarely shrink on the way.
